Seeding Info

Dear Valued Customer:

Enclosed you will find our seeding information. Please read it carefully and make a decision on seeding your lawn as soon as possible. The seeding price is (7x) the application price for the entire lawn. For example, if your application price is $30.00, then your seeding price is 7 x $30 or $210.00. What if your entire lawn doesn't need to be seeded, only part of it? We will seed partial lawns at a cost of $.06 per square foot, with a $50.00 minimum charge. For example, if you have a 5,000 sq. ft. lawn and your regular application charge is $36.00, then to reseed the entire lawn would cost $252.00. The cost to seed only half of this lawn would be 2,500 x .06=$150.00.
We feel it is very important to keep seeding prices low. Seeding is often a necessity for tall fescue lawns in this area, due to our harsh summers, especially with the weather we've experienced this summer. Brown patch disease, drought and water restrictions have devastated many lawns this past summer. Both are only moderately manageable by Hammerstone. New lawns often need to be reseeded 2 or 3 years in a row to establish them. Even established lawns need reseeding every 2 or 3 years in order to keep the turf quality high. This is why we have always strived to keep our seeding price low. Using the best available seed is a very high priority on our agenda. The latest research shows that a blend of three of the top rated Turf Type Fescues (the advanced generation of synthetic cultivars) will achieve as a blend, what no single variety can accomplish singly. This is the reasoning behind Hammerstone using a blend rather than using any one single variety.
We are excited about using a blend again this year. Since we started using a blend five years ago we have seen our area competition follow suit. They are trying the best way they know how to keep up with the area leader, Hammerstone. Remember, there are many factors besides the variety of the grass, that insure a quality turf. You must also follow our guidelines for maintaining a quality turf.
Our seeding program will begin the last week in August and continue into the second week in November. For scheduling, please read our scheduling procedures and policies, and call today.

SCHEDULING
We schedule our seeding by the week, not by the day. That means anytime during your scheduled week, Monday thru Saturday. we will seed your lawn. It is impossible for us to say which day for two reasons. First, our machines do not respect schedules and break downs are unavoidable in this hard soil. Second, we never know when it's going to rain and postpone our seeding crews for a day or two. However, we generally seed all lawns that are overdue from the previous week by Monday or Tuesday of the following week. This usually happens to only one in twenty lawns, so please be patient if you happen to be the one.
Many of our customers have asked us, when is the best time to seed? This is a decision that you will have to make depending on your schedule. You will have to mow the lawn short before we seed it, and you will have to water it regularly once it has been seeded. Seeding early will promote stronger grass before the trees lose their leaves, while seeding later may conserve water due to the cooler days and evenings. There are pro's and con's for both times, so relax and schedule when it's most convenient to you to prepare your lawn for seeding and watering afterwards. Experience has shown that thru mid-October has been the optimum seeding time for this area.

The following is a schedule of the weeks we will be seeding:

Week #1 Aug. 23-28
Week #2 Aug. 30 - Sept. 4
Week #3 Sept. 6 - 11
Week #4 Sept. 13 - 18
Week #5 Sept. 20 - 25
Week #6 Sept. 27 - Oct. 2
Week #7 Oct. 4 - 9
Week #8 Oct. 11 - 16
Week #9 Oct. 18 - 23
Week #10 Oct. 25 - 30
Week #11 Nov. 1 - 6
Week #12 Nov. 8 - 13

Please decide which week you would like your lawn seeded, and call our office. The earlier you call in the more likely you will get the week you desire. So, don't hesitate, call soon!
Watering and care instructions will be left with you when we do the actual seeding. If you have any additional questions or concerns feel free to give us a call and we'll do our best to help you out.
When we seed lawns, we do our best to keep the mess down, but our machines drop seed whenever they are running. This means that seed may be found on driveways or sidewalks. We minimize this by keeping the machines on the grass wherever possible.

HAMMERSTONE CUSTOMER SEEDING TIPS

Dear Valued Customer:
Your lawn has just been renovated with the best possible techniques and materials known to the industry. It will need a lot of attention not only by us, but by you as well. Regular and continuous watering is a must so follow the directions carefully. It is up to you to keep the soil moist for the next three to four weeks, in order for your investment to get established. Year after year I see homeowners spend hundreds of dollars, only to see their lawn regress instead of progress, because they do not keep their lawn moist. No matter how good of a seeding job we do your GRASS WILL NOT GROW WITHOUT CONSTANT SOIL MOISTURE!!!!!!

The absolute best way to water is with an underground sprinkler system, but since only a few homeowners have these, you will need to invest in portable sprinklers which attach to your outside faucets. If possible two or three sprinklers make the job easier than using just one.

The following are the steps that you should take in order to insure your lawn has the best possible chance of reaching it's full potential.

  1. Begin watering as soon as we are through seeding the lawn if possible. Watering twice a day until most of the seed has germinated (usually 16 days). Never allow the lawn to dry out because young seedlings can die in a matter of hours without water. Year after year, I will receive calls from our customers stating that their grass has not come up, so they decided it was a waste of time and money to continue watering and they quit watering yesterday. Please do not stop watering unless directed by us in the first month. If it rains at least three tenths of one inch you can skip one day of watering. The day it rained!!! Begin watering on regular schedule the following day.

  2. The amount of water that your lawn needs depends on several factors. Some areas need more water than others. A good rule of thumb is to water until the point of runoff then move the sprinkler, usually thirty minutes. Areas that usually need more water are: Bare areas near driveways and the street, slopes, areas underneath large trees, and areas exposed to the southern sky.

  3. Once the lawn has come up and has reached a height of two inches (usually 21 days) you may cut watering back to every other day until your lawn has been mowed twice, then watering twice a week in the absence of rain should be satisfactory.

  4. Begin mowing your lawn once it has reached a height of four inches, cutting it back to three inches. NEVER CUT FESCUE GRASS LOWER THAN THREE INCHES! Keep your blades sharp and mow frequently, never removing more than 30 percent of the leaf structure at any one mowing

  5. During the fall of the year it is very important to keep leaves off of the grass. Use a leaf blower if possible. If you have to rake, be careful not to pull up grass seedlings, rake very lightly.

  6. Our Guarantee: We guarantee 90% germination if you water by the above instructions. This means you can't skip a day unless it rains. WE GUARANTEE NOTHING IF YOU DON'T WATER AND WATER PROPERLY! If you do water properly and do not receive 90% germination we will be happy to reseed these areas as soon as possible. We can not and will not reseed in the spring because fescue seeded in the spring will not survive the hot dry summers that we experience.

*NOTE* WE WILL NOT RESEED ANY LAWN THAT WE HAVE NOT RECEIVED FULL PAYMENT FROM OUR INITIONAL SEEDING!!! REMEMBER, WE GUARANTEE OUR SEEDING, PLEASE GUARANTEE US PAYMENT.
