(Brown Patch)

Rhizoctonia Blight

Symptoms
& Signs:
  • Circular patches (1/2 -2 ft. in diameter) of light brown turf
  • On close-cut turf, patches may have a dark border
        (smoke ring)
  • On higher-cut turf, patch borders may be yellowish-green
        in color
  • Light brown lesions with dark borders occur on leaf blades
  • Areas beyond leaf lesions may be dark in color
        (water soaked)
  • Dark fungal growth often occurs at base of plant
  • Grasses
    Affected:
  • All cool-season grasses
  • Causal
    Agent(s):
  • Fungi: Rhizoctonia solani
  • Time of
    Occurence:
  • Late spring and summer
  • Conditions that
    Favor Disease:
  • Temperatures 75º - 85º F
  • Moist conditions (heavy dews, rain or improper irrigation
        that keep turf wet for prolonged periods)
  • During summer months, problem may occur in the shade
        or other areas that remain wet
