LEAF SCALES

Leaf Scales

Plant Damage / Signs:
  • Leaves have yellow spots
  • General Leaf yellowing occurs
  • Early leaf drop

  • Insect / Signs:
  • Scale appears as brown, red, white
or gray small swellings on leaves

  • Note:
  • Scale - there are two types of scale -

  •     soft (unarmored) and hard (armored)
Soft Scale: Fletcher, Lecanium, Wax Scales are examples. These scales do not have an armored coating and produce a sticky excretion, often resulting in a black fungal growth (sooty mold) on excretion.
Hard Scale: Oystershell, Tea, Euonymus Scales are examples. These scales are coated with a hard covering (armor), and do not produce a sticky excretion, therefore no black fungal growth.

Both scale types produce eggs that hatch into crawlers. These crawlers move about before settling to feed. Once settled, they no longer move.
