Plant Damage / Signs:
  • Most leaves totally removed (feeding)
  • Often entire trees defoliated


  • Insect / Signs:
  • Tiny larvae hang by silken thread; and
        travel with air currents
  • Larvae black and hairy
  • Adult moths white to tan
  • Egg masses on tree trunks, branches,
        buildings, fences, etc. Tan or buff-colored


  • Note:
  • Completely defoliated stands of trees will
        releaf the next Spring. Two or more years
        of defoliation often result in tree decline.
  • Plants:
     Many plants but prefer:
  • Apple
  • Elm
  • Hawthorn
  • Linden
  • Maple
  • Poplar
  • Oak
  • Willow


  • Timing:
  • Spring (larvae stage lasts for 7 weeks)
