Galls

Plant Damage / Signs:
  • Unsightly swellings (galls) on leaves,
        stems, buds or flowers
  • Leaf or stem distortion may occur
  • Stem dieback may occur


  • Insect / Signs:
  • Various size and shape swellings
        (depending on type of Gall)
  • Galls vary in color (white, green, pink,
        red, or brown)

  • Horned Oak Gall
  • Petiole Gall
  • Spruce Gall (see Adelgids)
  • Vein Pocket Gall
  • Wool Sower Gall


  • Note:
  • Galls are enlarged growths on various plant parts;
        such as leaves, stems, petiole or roots. Most galls
        are caused by insects or mites. However, a few
        galls (i.e. Crown Gall) are the result of disease
        causing pathogens.
